Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier, which is also commonly called the "Yorkie", is quite a complicated type of dog breed and has a storied past as well as unique characteristics. This article has information about this interesting dog breed.

The Yorkshire Terrier was originally bred in England during the early 1800's as a dog for killing field rodents including rats and mice. Afterward, they were brought to the United States in 1872 and were then registered with American Kennel Club. It wasn't very long before this breed became a highly popular breed to own as pets. it's no surprise that in the United States, Yorkshire Terriers are the second most popular dog breed just behind the popular Labrador.

Yorkshire Terriers are well known for having a coat of silky, soft, long flowing hair. owners often prize their Yorkshire Terriers for having the most attractive appearances, and bring them to compete often in tournaments. These dogs need daily grooming for their coats to maintain the healthy and tangle free look.

Yorkshire Terriers are among the smallest breeds of dogs in the world, but its temperament is just the opposite. They are fun, lively, personable and especially love to play catch and fetch with toys. However, the Yorkshire Terriers may turn aggressive when provoked, so families with young children are likely not a good match.

Yorkshire Terriers are smart and learn commands quickly compared to other breeds. Recent studies have shown that they are in the top 30% of all dog breeds for their intelligence.

While they are known to have a very high intelligence, Yorkshire Terriers can often also be quite stubborn, and as a result are sometimes difficult to train to do their business outside. By spending time and close attention to the Yorkshire Terrier, making sure they go out often and are highly praised, while putting them in their crate at night, you can be successful at potty-training your dog.

Yorkies are a toy dog breed and so they are small, having lots of hair which is usually a brown, black, and tan coat. Their hair can be very thin however, and unlike some other breeds they lack an undercoat. Because unlike other breeds they shed lightly and don't have dandruff, they can be ideal house pets.

The Yorkie is a highly intelligent dog, an can learn basic commands including stay, sit, or fetch after only a few training sessions. Sometimes though the Yorkie will try to act bigger than their size, by barking at bigger dogs than they. They can therefore be excellent watch dogs, since they will bark when a stranger is at the door. Yorkies are very loyal and loving pets, yet still enjoy being independent and alone at times.

Some of the most common health problems for Yorkies are sensitive skin, tooth decay, bronchitis, and a sensitive digestive system. The small size of the Yorkie makes surgery and anesthesia also tricky for this breed.

The normal life span for Yorkies is between 10 and 15 years. By taking care to exercise your Yorkie, feed them well and keep them happy, they can lead a long, healthy life. These are wonderful dogs, and Yorkies make a perfect pet for any animal lover.
