The Papillon

These dogs are neither aggressive nor shy. They enjoy being the center of attention, and even given their size they are strong dogs. since they love affection, they don't like being mistreated or teased, so they are best in homes with older children in the family. While they are never dangerous they can get somewhat too protective of their owners. This can result in their showing some aggression toward other animals or people.

It is fairly easy to train this dog breed. while many dogs will become stubborn in training, that is not true of the Papillon. Instead they are happy to learn and enjoy tackling difficult problems due to their intelligence.

The Papillon is an intelligent, friendly pet that is very tough despite its small size. As with so many other toy dog breeds, the Papillon dog is very playful, highly alert, and also affectionate. This is an elegant dog, not great for being a guard dog, but very loving toward people.

If you are seeking to incorporate them into a family with other pets, additional training for socialization is a must. They seek to be protective and take the role of attention getter which can cause problems.

The Papillon is an excellent show dog or is also used in therapy due to their loving temperament. This dog must have exercise daily to keep it healthy. A back yard or nearby park for playing and running is perfect. Do not leave this dog alone in a yard however, as they also like to escape their enclosures.

The Papillon sports a long plume tail that it carries in a curl over its back. Its coat is long and lustrous and its ears are carried either direct or drooped, also known as Phalene Papillon, meaning moth. It has a white band on its nose and it's eyes are alert and intelligent. Commonly its coat is white with some patches of secondary color.

This breed enjoys being outdoors and is gentle, affectionate, lively and charming. It can also be quite dignified. Papillon is usually obedient and steady, but as with other breeds, this dog can sometimes be timid. Papillons are usually friendly with people but are sometimes aggressive with other dogs.

The Papillon strongly protects its territory, and as a result is not usually a dog for apartment living due to its barking in response to noises in nearby apartments. If kept mainly as indoor dogs, they will react with stress unless they get enough outdoor exercise.

The Papillon was added to the American Kennel Club in 1935 and is part of the AKC Toy Group. The breed is between 8 and 11 inches in height, and will weigh between 7 and 10 pounds. As with other breeds in the Toy group, the Papillon can live up to 15 years or more when well cared for.
