This breed loves
being outdoors. Try to take it on reasonable walks using a leash
to help give it the needed exercise. They will love the chance
to be outside.
Dachshunds are immediately recognizable breeds from their long
low profile. Sometimes called "sausage dogs" by kids,
anyone can tell why!
The Miniature
Dachshund gets its name from following prey right
into the burrow, where it would pull it out and then kill it.
The early Dachshund was smooth coated, with a long haired
variety bred with German Spaniels, and a wire haired variety
bred with Terriers and Pinschers.
A Miniature Dachshund in appearance looks like a dwarf of a
standard Dachshund. These have the same coat varieties,
including long haired, wire haired and smooth haired.
Even given their tiny proportions, Dachshunds are muscular and
strong dogs having broad shoulders and hindquarters. The
Dachshund has pretty almond shaped eyes which are set in a long,
well proportioned face. Dachshunds can be found in a wide
variety of colors, although black and tan are the most commonly
known.
With a variety of different coat types, the Miniature Dachshunds
need regular grooming in a moderate amount, especially the long
haired variety.
Even though small, Miniature Dachshunds were bred to be hunt.
Exercise is very welcome, perhaps an hour a day. Owners
should be sure to use care if letting this dog off lead due to
their hunting instincts. If the dog picks up a scent, they could
try to go to ground, and dig out the 'prey'! As a result, a
garden secured with a fence is perfect for Miniature Dachshunds,
as they love to dig and could even dig enough to escape their
pen if allowed!
Due to their having an elongated spine, Miniature Dachshunds
should also be restricted in accessing stairs to help avoid any
spinal damage.
The Dachshund is
very curious, bold and is always ready for adventure. A
Dachshund is also good with children within its own family, but
might nip at stranger children. These are not sociable dogs.
Dachshunds,
while being good tempered and loyal to their owners, can react
differently to strangers. They are very smart, and since they
are strong willed, they are not always easy train. Giving this
dog training and socialization early on will benefit the dog
greatly especially off lead for this natural hunter.
When
trained early, this dog can be good with children, but children
should also learn to treat the dog with respect as well.
Dachshunds will often develop a strong bond one particular
member of the family. |
