Flea & Tick Prevention Methods Compared
Pets are common carriers of ticks and fleas, particularly dogs. Don't forget that ticks like humans too. Learn what the signs are of fleas and ticks, and compare these effective methods for ridding your pet of them.
Fleas
Fleas will move around between the outdoors and indoors. They will multiply when they feed on your dog. Usually the best treatment
is administered by your vet. A fast solution is to use a flea comb, which helps remove them from fur. There is no effective treatment that will kill the fleas, but the treatments are intended instead to stop the fleas from reproducing.
If you have fleas you will need to clean your entire home thoroughly. Be sure to vacuum every inch of the house, all carpets, rugs, sofas and chairs. Afterwards, wash the floors, walls and furniture with bleach (if it does not ruin your furniture or floors). Be sure to open your windows before cleaning due to the fumes. Wash all clothing and fabric items that you can in hot water and a hot dryer.
On your lawn, you may also need professional treatment to eliminate any nests of fleas. Be sure you find out what chemicals will be used so you can determine if they could hurt your pet. Ask your vet if you need to keep your pet away from the lawn for a bit after treatment.
An alternative to the chemicals is something "diatomaceous earth". This is an organic compound and is non-toxic. While you should wear a mask when applying it, it is considered safe for pets and humans.
After you take all of these steps, last you should throw away any bedding your pet used, any feeding bowls you can't wash thoroughly in the dishwasher, or pet toys.
Ticks
Ticks can be quite nasty. They are the cause of many diseases in both pets and humans. To stop tick infestation, you can try these suggestions:
Any time you walk your pet outdoors, whether in your neighborhood or on wooded trails, avoid any areas where ticks cluster, such as wooded areas, dense brush, or shaded, cool spots. Avoid brushing your clothing or pet's coat against small trees.
Be sure to check thoroughly for ticks that may have attached themselves to your skin or clothing. It's best to wear light-colored clothing in order to be able to see ticks clearly. You can also use your flea-comb to check your pet thoroughly as well.
Even though ticks are often found borrowing into pet fur, they also cling to clothing. When you walk your pet in favorite tick environments, wear long sleeves and long pants to cover your skin.
Ticks are the cause of Lyme disease, and today they can be active all year long. The most active times for young, immature ticks are May and June, while adult ticks are active during October and November whenever the temperature is above 35 degrees Fahrenheit. Some symptoms you an suffer from a tick bite are pain and swelling in the joints, headache, rash, and even symptoms that imitate a flu.
Once you know how to avoid ticks and fleas, an dhow to get rid of them, you'll know better how to check and protect your home, pets and family from these pests.
