What To Look For When Choosing a Dog Breed

Several things should be considered when you are choosing a dog breed. Here is a list of a few of them.

You want to select a breed that will be complementary to your personality for example. If you have a family, and are looking for a

pet to be with children, find out how the breed fares around kids.

You can choose breeds within certain dog groups as well, such as small dog breeds, including Poodle, Pekinese, Terrier. You might instead prefer larger dogs like the Chow Chow, Bulldog, or Bichon Friz? Some people prefer breeds like Bassett Hound or Beagle for their pet.

Your new dog’s temperament will be a major part of how you should choose the right dog for you. You should also take some time to consider these questions before making a final decision.

* Do you prefer having a large dog?
* Does this type of dog fit your current lifestyle?
* Do you like long haired dogs, or short haired?
* Are there certain facial features in a dog that you prefer?
* Dill you want a dog with a feisty personality, or one that is more dependent, or even playful?
* Are you interested in a show dog?
* Do you plan to keep you dog indoors most of the time, or will you keep your dog outside?
* Do you want to own a guard dog?
* Have you determined how much time and effort you can devote to owning a dog?
* Do you prefer dogs that you can train to understand and follow commands?
* Do you want an independent dog that can be left alone for periods of time?
* Would you consider owning a mixed breed?

After you answer the above questions, your next decision is where to purchase your dog. Are you thinking of adopting from a shelter, or will you be buying from a dog breeder? If you choose a breeder, you may want to follow the guidelines below.

As an example, we'll assume you are purchasing a Bichon Friz. These dogs are wonderful with children, are very playful and also very loving, and there are many breeders you can locate online. First, you will want to call the breeder and see if a dog is available. Often, Bichon Friz can be highly prized for their talent as show dogs. Online breeders make it easy to trace a particular dog's pedigree. This way you can get a clear idea whether there has been any cross-breeding and if their lineage is intact.

You can also buy a dog through a local pet store. Be aware however that some pet stores can be less than up front about where they got their dogs, and what the dogs' health situation is before you buy.

You might also try to meet a particular dog breed before you choose. If you have a friend or family member who owns a dog that you like, maybe you can take your children to spend some time with them to see if your kids and the dog work well together. You can also talk to the owner for more information before you buy. This can help you make a very informed decision about your chosen dog breed.

By taking these steps and knowing what will work for you, you'll find the right breed for your lifestyle and your family's lifestyle, and know your choice of dog to buy or adopt will be the right one for years to come.
